The Power of ECTNs in international trade

06/02/2024

In the dynamic world of international trade, embracing technological advancements is crucial for enhancing efficiency and staying competitive. One such innovation that has revolutionized the maritime industry is the Electronic Cargo Tracking Note (ECTN). This blog post explores the advantages of ECTN and its impact on streamlining shipping processes for increased efficiency and reduced costs.

  1. Real-time access to pre-arrival information: ECTN ensures that information is electronically available after validation at the port of loading. This eliminates the traditional practice where shipping lines deposit manifests only 48 hours before a vessel's arrival at the discharge port.
  2. Improved control on cargo values: ECTN allows for the verification of custom documents and commercial invoices, offering better control over cargo values. This verification process aids in the accurate calculation and collection of custom duties, preventing revenue leakage and ensuring compliance.
  3. Integration with existing IT systems: one of the notable features of ECTN is its compatibility with existing local IT systems, such as Single Window, Port & Customs management systems, optimizing data exchange. This seamless integration enhances data accuracy and facilitates a more efficient exchange of information across various platforms.
  4. Real-time statistics on import and export cargoes: ECTN provides real-time statistics on import and export cargoes, offering valuable insights into trade patterns and trends. This data-driven approach empowers authorities and stakeholders to make informed decisions, contributing to strategic planning and resource allocation.
  5. Protection of local shippers’ interests: by providing better knowledge of shipping possibilities, freight rates, and charges, ECTN safeguards the interests of local shippers. This transparency helps them make informed decisions, fostering a more competitive and fair-trading environment.
  6. Enhancing national safety: ECTN contributes to national safety by providing pre-arrival knowledge of expected imports. This allows authorities to identify and check sensitive cargoes, strengthening security measures and ensuring the safe handling of shipments.

ECTN is electronically issued at the loading port by the shipper or forwarder and it contains relevant information on :

  • The name of the shipper, forwarder, exporter, consignee, notify party, importer, forwarding agent.
  • The name of the shipping line and carrying vessel and its voyage number, the departure date, estimated date of arrival, BL number and name of the loading port, discharge port, transshipment port and port of destination.
  • The HS code and cargo description, weight and volume of the cargo, the number and type of containers, incoterms like EXW, FCA, CPT, CIP, DAT, DAP, DDP, FAS, FOB, CFR, CIF, DPU.
  • The container and chassis numbers.
  • Kind of shipment : FCL container, groupage/consolidation/LCL Cargo, vehicles RO/RO, Vrac/Conventional/Bulk/Liquid/Complete vessel.
  • The cost of sea freight, other additional charges and cargo value.
  • A copy of the Bill of Lading BL, commercial invoice, export customs declaration, freight invoice, packing list, certificate of insurance, certificate of conformity or registration certificate, certificate of origin, advance import declaration, GUOT document, VGM document.

In conclusion, the Electronic Cargo Tracking Note (ECTN) emerges as a game-changer in the maritime industry, offering a myriad of advantages that enhance efficiency, reduce costs, and contribute to the overall competitiveness of national ports. Embracing ECTN is not just a technological leap; it's a strategic move towards a more efficient and secure future for international trade.
